For further upgrading of SEE Net results “Danube River – a bridge for economic and social cooperation” project has been prepared to be submitted under the third call for proposals of CBC program Romania-Bulgaria.

The cross border area Vidin – Kalafat has strong potential for devolvement. The Danube River has always been a natural path for trade and economic exchange between the two countries but new realities have to be taken into account.

The proposed action is designed on the ground of preliminary analyses where the following main factors have been observed:

Weaknesses:

- economical backwardness  of the region;

- low income generation;

- insufficient foreign investment;

- low qualification of the labour force;

Positive prerequisites:

- geographical situation – the Danube river connects the region with Central and Western Europe;

- traditions in industrial production and fruitful land;

- the bridge Vidin-Kalafat- a major infrastructural project which is going to be finalized in the near future. The facility will make the transportation and exchange between the neighboring countries much easier and convenient

General objective: To create environment for sustainable economic development of the cross-border region

Specific objectives: To improve the cross-border cooperation among economic operators in the target region; To create and introduce effective mechanisms for  cross-border exchange; To contribute to improvement of investment climate in the regions of Vidin and Kalafat.
